It’s easy to make your own household cleaning products using non-toxic ingredients you can buy from the grocery store. I’ve been using these simple cleaning solutions for years, and I can’t even tell you how much money I’ve saved. I’m always whipping out my handy spray bottle solution and friends keep asking what I use. It’s such a great idea and I get so many compliments on how spotless everything looks.

Below you’ll find three helpful recipes for making your own cleaning products. But first, let’s think about why we’re DIY-ing…

Benefits of DIY Cleaners

There are so many great reasons to get started. Here are some of the top benefits to making your own products:

  • Save Money – You’ll have extra cash from not buying expensive cleaning products. It costs just pennies to make your own cleaning products!
  • Easy and Convenient – Always keep these simple ingredients on hand and you can make your own products in seconds.
  • Safe – They’re all natural and non-toxic. You don’t have to worry about young children and beloved pets getting into toxic products under the sink.
  • Better For Us – These simple natural ingredients are better for us. Like that freshly cleaned smell? Typical cleaning products are full of chemicals that we breathe in. We don’t realize, but they irritate and can even harm our systems. You can still enjoy a fresh scent using natural ingredients listed below.
  • Better For The Environment – Using natural ingredients is better for our planet too. When we clean our kitchen and bathroom drains, we’re literally pouring harsh chemicals down the drain. Not only will they damage the pipes over time, but think of where the chemicals end up. They’re harmful to our ecosystems and mix into the air we breathe, our earth and our water. Yikes!
  • Reduce Waste – Think of all the packaging we’re saving by making our own cleaning solutions. Less containers end up in landfills and we can reduce the amount of plastic being processed in recycling plants.

Let’s Get Started!

You’ll need just a few things to start making your own products. These simple ingredients are always great to have on hand and will last a long time.

  • Spray bottle
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Lemon juice
  • Olive oil
  • Soft cloth
  • Extras: Your favorite essential oil (e.g. Lavender, Lemon)

Multipurpose Household Cleaner

This is the ultimate cleaning solution and my all-time favorite. It can be used on many surfaces like kitchen and bathroom surfaces, mirrors, windows, floors, just about anything you can think of – even your coffee maker!

  1. Simply mix equal parts of vinegar and water into a spray bottle.
  2. Try adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a nice scent! I like calming lavender, or lemon for a fresh citrus scent.
  3. Lightly spray surface and wipe with a soft cloth.

Wood Cleaner

Does your wooden furniture look a little dull? Try this cleaning solution:

  1. Mix 1 cup of water with 3 Tbsp of white vinegar into a spray bottle.
  2. Lightly spray surface and wipe with a soft cloth.

Still need a polish?

  1. Mix ¼ cup of lemon juice, 1/8 cup of white vinegar, and 1/8 cup of olive oil into a bowl.
  2. Dip a soft cloth into the bowl, wring out any excess solution and start wiping down the furniture.

Drain Cleaner

Over time the kitchen and bathroom drains may start to smell or get clogged, causing water to drain slowly. This one takes a little more time to let the ingredients work their magic on the nasty stuff inside the drain.

  1. Pour boiling hot water down the drain.
  2. Next pour ½ cup of baking soda into the drain. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of hot water. Pour down the drain, on top of the baking soda.
  4. Put in that plug! (The ingredients need to mix together and make their way down the drain to clean away all that gross stuff.)
  5. Leave it for 10 minutes.
  6. While you’re waiting, boil another pot of water so it’s ready to pour down the drain. This will flush out any remaining solution.
  7. If you’ve got any left over hot water, make yourself a relaxing cup of tea – you deserve it!

There you have it. Who doesn’t love a fresh clean home on a budget? Always keep a spray bottle under the kitchen sink, and you’re ready to go. Start saving money and helping the environment one room at a time. You can enjoy your clean home and breathe a (non-toxic) sigh of relief.
